A Ladies Pavilion wedding offers a romantic and intimate setting in Central Park. The charming Victorian cast iron gazebo originally built in 1871 and relocated to its current Central Park location in 1912. Well-maintained and offering shelter from light rain or snow, it provides a picturesque setting for intimate weddings or elopements. With space for 20–25 guests and two benches inside, the pavilion is nestled near 77th Street and West Drive, surrounded mostly by foliage. Its unique character is enhanced by occasional bird nests in spring, adding a touch of nature to the setting.

However, those seeking a private ceremony should note that the area is a popular spot for tourists and parkgoers, especially in the afternoons and on pleasant days. Nearby paths and rocks often attract foot traffic, which can make the site feel busy. For the most peaceful experience, a weekday morning ceremony is recommended, particularly in the spring through fall. Interestingly, the nearby inlet was once reserved for “ladies only” ice skating, and the pavilion’s name harkens back to the era when such traditions subtly challenged social norms—holding hands while skating was once a rare public gesture of affection!

Pro & Cons of a Ladies Pavilion Wedding

The Ladies Pavilion is a very popular location in the park. This guide addresses many of the questions and concerns you may have. Here is my quick list of top pro and cons.

Pros

  • Location: Iconic mid park location, accessible via a 5 min walk from Central Park West and 77th Street. The Ladies pavilion sits a top the Hernshead rock outcrop.
  • Aesthetics: A former ornate Victorian trolley shelter offering views of The Lake. A natural aisle for approach by bride or groom. Beautiful in every season.
  • Rain Shelter: The Ladies Pavilion provides shelter from rain or snow for several people
  • Accessible: The location is wheelchair accessible and has some seating.

Cons

  • Crowds: Depending on the time of day and season, this location can be quite busy. It is one of the most popular wedding ceremony locations in the park. However, it is also popular with bike tours and park goers looking to climb the nearby Hernshead rock outcrop. Weekday mornings tend to be less crowded, but I recommend getting a permit for a wedding to be on the safe side.
  • Space: In the pavilion itself, you can fit about 3-4 people on the benches on each side, and the couple and the officiant in the middle. (7-9) All other guests will need to be on the path.
  • Privacy: As a ceremony site, it is unpredictable in terms of on lookers. If you are already nervous or don’t like being the center of attention, I don’t suggest the location for a ceremony in the warmer months. Winter is usually fine! Consider The Charles Stover Bench in Shakespeare’s Garden instead.

Wedding Ceremony Permit Details

Can we get married at the Ladies Pavilion?

Yes, weddings are permitted at the Ladies Pavilion in Central Park with or without a permit. However, gatherings of 20 or more people require a $25 permit. They can be applied for with the NYC Parks Department here. You will also need a valid NY State Marriage License and an officiant to marry legally. Learn more about that process here.

Should we get a permit if our wedding has less than 20 people?

A permit is recommend for ALL wedding ceremonies at the Ladies Pavilion regardless of the size. Applying for a permit will let you know if there are any events, other weddings, photo or film shoots planned that could effect your day. While having a permit helps, it will not grant you exclusive access to the location.

How far in advance should we get the permit and what is the fee?

Book the permit as soon as you confirm your plans and they are available. Processing a permit request for a Ladies Pavilion wedding typically takes between 21 to 30 days, so be sure to plan well in advance. Additionally, permits are not issued for major holidays, as these days are reserved for public use on a first-come, first-served basis. Make sure to check your desired date to avoid any conflicts!

What are some of the specific locations couples can marry at the Ladies Pavilion?

You can marry under the shelter or on the flat rocks overlooking The Lake. If the lake water level is low enough or you bring waterproof shoes, there is a lovely spot on the backside of the large rocks for a small elopement with a great view of The Lake.

Location & Transport

How do we get to the Ladies Pavilion?

For the shortest walk to the area, enter the park at either 77nd Street and Central Park West. Walk roughly 4 mins towards the middle of the park. The route is not straight, but follow the roadway or use a GPS map for directions.

Can you get to the Ladies Pavilion by car or vehicle?

Vehicles cannot access the Terrace roadway anymore, but pedi cabs can. However, given how close this location is to a park entrance, I’d direct guests and Central Park West and 77th via a cab or car service. It is then just a short walk.

Any suggestions for transporting guests to a reception after?

Yes! I’ve had couples hire busses, trolleys, pedicabs and limos to transport their guests. You will want to arrange pick-up/drop off points at easily found park exits like 59th & 5th Avenues, 77nd and Central Park West/5th Avenue or 59th and 6th Avenue.

Rules and Features

Can we decorate, have music or pop some Champagne for our Ladies Pavilion Wedding?

Decoration is not allowed and neither is amplified music. (Well, I have had couples temporarily hang flower garland. You just must remove anything you use.) However, you can hire acoustic musicians to serenade you. I’ve had couples hire string players or the saxephone player who is often on The Mall. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed in the park. If you want some celebratory bubbly, bring sparking juice.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

The Ladies Pavilion area has a ramp that approaches the shelter. In addition, the closest accessible restrooms are in at the Delacorte Theater Restrooms about 8 mins away. (Reopening in Summer 2025)

Is there any seating at a Ladies Pavilion Wedding?

There is seating on benches for 3-4 people on either side of the shelter.

After the ceremony are there other photo locations nearby?

Given its central location, the Ladies Pavilion is near many popular photo locations including the Hernshead rock outcrop. The Bow Bridge, Cherry Hill, Shakespeare’s Garden, and The Lake are all a 5 minute or less walk away.

Can we celebrate our Ladies Pavilion Wedding nearby?

The closest dining option in the park is Tavern on the Green, a 12 minute walk away. Of course, with such easy access to Central Park West, you could easily head to restaurants outside of the park.

Open for lunch and dinner, the tavern bar can be a stop for a champagne toast to end your elopement or a multi course private dinner. Reservations for regular dining can be made on their website up to two months in advance. Inquire about private dining options.

Timing the Ceremony

When is the best time for a Ladies Pavilion Wedding?

The best time for a wedding ceremony in this popular location would be in the morning on a weekday. There will likely be less people and distractions. However, for some the location is more important and we will make it work. Central Park is beautiful through out the year, but the fountain will be at its loveliest when flowing April-October.

Is there a time of avoid having a wedding at the Ladies Pavilion Wedding?

Weekends and afternoons will see the most traffic at the Ladies Pavilion area which makes having a ceremony more challenging. (Though in the winter, you will probably be fine mid-day outside of the holidays.) I love the Hernshead area in the winter mid day, as pictured here.

Weather

Is the Ladies Pavilion a good rainy day wedding ceremony location?

The pavilion offers shelter from the rain and hot sun, which can be ideal for a small ceremony. However, more than 9 people won’t easily fit in the shelter so not all guests will be protected.

Should you have a Ladies Pavilion Wedding?

The Ladies Pavilion is a popular wedding post for a reason. It is such an iconic location and is truly a beautiful background for wedding photos. However, the spot may not be ideal for everyone. It can really be a lovely spot on a less buys day, but I’ve been there when large tour groups show-up. Not ideal while a ceremony is happening and you’d have little control.

If it is your top choice, I will help ensure it will be as successful as possible. Of course, if you want to consider other locations, please reach out!
