Governors Island is the perfect location for an intimate wedding. The island has really been transformed from its heyday as various military bases to an oasis in the middle of NYC for relaxation, picnics, bike riding, dining, and special events like the Jazz Age Law Party. There are accommodations for overnight glaming stays during the summer months. There is even a spa. It sits just off lower Manhattan and has spectacular views of it and the Statue of Liberty. The ferry is free or inexpensive and runs daily from the Battery Maritime Building in Manhattan and additionally on weekends from Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 and Red Hook/Atlantic Basin.

How to have an Intimate Wedding on Governors Island
In order to have an intimate wedding at Governors Island, one needs to apply for a permit. There are quite a few different locations for outdoor weddings. There is also capacity for up to 60 guests indoors. In order to legally marry, you will need a NY state marriage license which can be obtained from the an NYC marriage bureau or any clerk in the state. You will need a registered NYC officiant to sign your certificate.
A Real Wedding Experience
The first look was held at Elevated Acres and then everyone took the ferry to Governors Island. The ceremony was officiated by Officiant NY at the Admiral’s House. The wedding itself went according to plan, with one little issue, it rained almost the entire time. It was just one of those early summer storms that poured a steady rain all afternoon making their wedding one I know the guests will never forget!
Imagine riding surries all over the island in the rain, it was quite an adventure. After touring the island and stopping for snacks and photos with the Statue of Liberty, everyone boarded the ferry back to Manhattan.
After the rain, Il Buco wine cellar is the perfect place to warm up over appetizers and dinner. The private cellar was a cozy ending with an array of Italian appetizers and of course, wine.
