Zoe or Dexter?

Vote now for your favorite cat picture. (Cast your vote in the comments) I swear, I was only trying out some new equipment and they were the only available models. But my husband thinks Dexter could be a cat model because of his little beauty mark.(He’s in the bottom pic)

It's just another manic Monday……

I love the 1980. Of course I was under ten years of age for most of it, I can still appreciate the culture of the time and especially the music. I got the opportunity to photograph a 80’s prom themed charity event last night. It was a ton of fun and also a challenge. Ever try photographing a smoke-machine filled dance floor with ever changing lighting patterns, you know that I mean. So to keep with the spirit of things and avoid ugly clouds in my images, I resorted to some creativity. Here are two different effects. I had a great time and from the looks of things, so did the 300 or so guests. I even dressed-up too.

Is that a dinosaur on your ceiling?

Yesterday was such a beautiful day here. I was assigned another City Living for Park Slope, Brooklyn. Basically, I get to spend a day exploring a neighborhood in the New York area, photographing its people, food, shops and buildings. (I’ve also got some examples in my tearsheets from previous ones) Ryan, my husband, came along because we heard that there was a new New Orleans restaurant there and he was dying for a po-boy. He helped out until it got late and he was tired of being a living lightstand (holding my flash off camera for portraits). Usually I do these assignments alone, so it was interesting to hear him say how many people would stare at me with a strange look while I was shooting. I never see this, of course, so I never get to see those looks. I guess they just don’t “see” what I see.

Here’s an example. While waiting for the F train at Smith and 9th St. station, I looked up and saw the peeling paint on the ceiling. I thought it looked interesting when the train’s light reflected on it and then I noticed a strange shape- it looked like an animal or maybe even a stegosaurus. Anyway, I started clicking away. Ryan was like, ” what are you doing” as I pointed my lens to the sky- “people must think you are crazy”. Even some kid sitting on the bench with his mom was pointing at me. I tried to show Ryan what I saw, but he didn’t get it. I’ll bet if that kid was less shy, he may have seen the dinosaur in the paint too!

Anyway, usually I’m shooting things less subjective. But even the buildings and streets where you live might seem ordinary even boring to you and you’d wonder why bother capturing them. I see it as my job to find interesting things, moments, and even quirky designs in paint to offer viewers a new perspective on the world. And if that means people stare, so be it. If they ask, I’ll even show them what I’m looking at!

More on Park Slope later this week.

It is crunch time around here as my boss prepares to leave on a 5 week, round-the-world trip, to Canada, Mongolia, China, and Chile. There must be about 15 cameras in the studio somewhere, but it was my handy cell phone camera that caught this memorable moment….

Daniel

Three years ago today, my dear friend Daniel Breaux danced his last two-step. Months later, a 15 year old boy was convicted of his murder. A botched robbery attempt by children (!) ended his life as he went to his car after a day at Jazz Fest. I can only imagine that his last day was a great one, spent with people he loved and doing what he loved. But, even the passing years haven’t mended my sorrow at his death or the thoughts of all the moments together we were denied. Daniel was treasured by many, and I know I am not alone in my sentiments. We have our memories, but I know we could have had many more.

So to all whose lives were touched by Daniel, may we remember him with joy and with a dance in our step.
