Crawfish Festival

June 2nd, 2009 klmay

I never would have guess it, but there is a crawfish festival in New Jersey. Really. It was started by a Louisiana native, Michael Arnone, 20 years ago. I had a great time, in particular witnessing and shooting Guitar Shorty’s walk through the crowd. More images in the slideshow:

Bye, Alps!

March 18th, 2009 klmay

Not that I actually visited the Alps when I was in Switzerland, but I did get a nice glimpse of them flying back to New York last week. It was a great trip and I hope to have some images from my trip to Germany up soon. Tune in next year to see the images I shot in Switzerland, they won’t be published until 2010! And so it goes….

Fasnacht awaits

February 25th, 2009 klmay

Four years ago I had the awesome chance to experience fasnacht (carnival) in Basel, Switzerland. It is truly a unique sensory experience with 72 straight hours of piccolo and drum music and fantastic costumes. And of course there is a lot of eating and drinking.? I’m really excited to get the chance to go back this year on assignment for Saveur! I’m also going to Germany to visit family and friends. Here’s an image from last time. (flash is not allowed, people will yell very awful things in German, and I prefer natural light anyway)

Luckily, it wasn’t an apple tree

While visiting Bear Mountain State Park, I noticed this rather grumpy looking tree bearing an uncanny resemblance to the attacking trees from the Wizard of Oz. See them here.

Maine Memories

August 9th, 2008 klmay

As I sit here sweating in my hot Brooklyn abode, I long of the cooler weather of Maine. (And my wonderful, clean and air conditioned hotel room)

Need a sink?

July 29th, 2008 klmay

I am staying 1.5 miles from the workshop classroom and dining hall. Which isn’t an issue really, it just means I have to walk or hitch a ride with Marty, the van driver, or someone else.? I prefer to walk because the food here is actually pretty good (cookies, ice cream, great vegetarian options at every meal) and don’t want to pay for the indulgence. Besides, you can always find interesting things along the road, even in a quaint place like Rockport.

?Kristy May Early Morning Deliveries

Hello from Camden, Maine! For the third year in a row I am in Maine for a week assisting National Geographic photographer Ira Block at the The Maine Photographic Workshops. I usually stay at a house in the Rockport area, but this year I am in Camden about a mile up the coast at a lovely little hotel, The Inn at Camden Place. We have 10 students from all over the US and one from Mexico. Should be an interesting week, I’ll try and post images everyday.
